Essential Oils for Babies and Infants

Aromatherapy and essential oil (EO) use has garnered major popularity among all age groups because of its effectiveness in treating a variety of ailments. Another reason for EO popularity is because these oils offer a safer form of treatment and healing compared to synthetically produced drugs that contain a lot of harmful chemicals. Various application methods and uses include but are not limited to baths, teas, massage oils, inhalants, and diffusers.

Are EOs Safe for Newborns and Babies?

Whenever introducing foreign substances into the body, even with essential oils that are considered gentle and natural, it is always best to take a certain amount of precaution.

An Introduction to Baby Aromatherapy

A branch of aromatherapy called “baby aromatherapy” addresses the issue of whether essential oils are safe to use for babies and toddlers. Certified aromatherapists say that some essential oils are essentially safe for topical use on babies three months and older, but that they should not be used on newborns. According to Healthline.com:

“For babies older than 3 months, the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) recommends a safe dilution ratio of .5 to 1 percent, compared to a 2.5 to 10 percent dilution for adults.”

Safe for Babies 3 Months and Older

The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians also advises against using EOs on infants under 3 months of age. Because neonatal skin takes 3 months to fully mature, the permeability of EOs is enhanced. Newborns are not able to deal with any adverse reactions that may occur with use as compared to adults who have stronger, matured immune systems.

Essential Oil Precuations

Essential oils should never be used internally by children or infants. If using essential oils in a bath, extreme caution must be taken to prevent accidental ingestion. Essential oils can cause seizures in babies and children if used improperly.
